Recycling Your Monarch® Kit

Monarch was developed to provide a more sustainable option for nucleic acid purification. We encourage you to reuse the kit components whenever possible. Detailed recycling instructions can be found below.

How to recycle your Monarch kit components

The Monarch boxes and inserts can be recycled in either the corrugated material recycling stream or the paper recycling stream. These boxes are made from 100% post-consumer recycled material, and the printing uses soy-based inks.

Bottles are made from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) (#2), and caps are made from Polypropylene (#5). Please rinse the bottles before recycling. Labels should not be a concern, as recycling facilities are accustomed to handling them, just like with consumer goods (e.g., food and beverages).

These can be recycled in the paper recycling stream. They are printed at a facility that is a member of the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, using Astrolite PC100 paper made from 100% post-consumer content. The printing process uses soy-based inks, which are non-toxic and emit fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than traditional inks.

Both the bag and zipper closure are made from 100% Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) (#4) and can be recycled with other plastic films. Many LDPE zipper bags have closures made from different plastics like HDPE or PVC, which can contaminate the LDPE recycling stream. That is why we took extra care to source bags with only LDPE.

These are made from polypropylene (#5) and are recyclable. However, please follow your institutional policies for proper disposal. The small amount of silica in the column does not affect recyclability. Although not required, it is ideal to pop out the membrane before recycling to maximize the quality of post-consumer plastic. **
